W200 Porton? Windvane

Datasheet: login to download NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR NEW APPLICATIONS AND IS ONLY AVAILABLE AS A SPARE FOR EXISTING INSTALLATIONS.

The W200 Porton™ Windvane is a highly sensitive wind direction sensor incorporating a unique reed-switch transducer. Operation is by means of a small permenant magnet which turns with the vane, thus there is effectively just one moving part with very little friction resulting in an instrument having a long service life and requiring little or no maintenance.

This windvane is ideal for connection to an analogue meter or recorder, the display or chart being free from frequent switching at north as occurs when using a conventional potentiometer. Averaging is neccesary to reduce the effect of wind fluctuations, and in normal turbulent conditions, it improves resolution enabling accurate readings to be taken. The output varies over a 600° range with 360° switching at the range extremities.

In all but very light wind conditions, provided that there is good exposure of the instrument, range swithing occurs very infrequently, these events being of short duration and easily identified on chart records. A 'north reference' output is provided which serves as a self-test feature and also enables calibration of indicating and recording equipment.

The body of the W200 instrument must be aligned to North during installation, however a self-referencing version SRW1G is available which contains an internal compass mechanism and is suitable for applications where the platform orientation is unknown or variable, for example buoys at sea.

The small size and weight of the W200, together with the unique gravity-sensitive fastener for the vane-arm, facilitates use in portable applications, and although built to withstand hurricane force, the low-torque transducer coupled with the balanced vane turns in very light winds.

Construction is from anodised aluminium alloys and stainless steels for exposed parts. The stainless steel shaft runs in a precision corrosion resistant ball-race and hard plastic upper bearing. The bearings are protected from the entry of rain and moisture droplets resulting in an instrument suitable for permenant exposure to the weather.

The recommended mounting adaptors for use with this instrument are our type 405 and 405-1 series.

    Notes:
    This product is NOT recommended for new applications .
    * = winds >2m/s, with averaging
    ** = with standard F20 vane/fin (other vane/fins are available)
    *** = The output signal from the W200 is differential and is generally not the easiest to measure using a datalogger
    - our W200P Potentiometer Windvane is more suitable.
